As well as forestry and agriculture there's a heritage of coal mining. Only 1 working pit remains now, Thoresby Colliery at Ollerton.

Hucknall is the largest town but there are many former coal field villages like Bilsthorpe and Ollerton. Traditional rural villages like Oxton and Gunthorpe also abound.

There are 2 District Councils, a Borough Council and a County Council which operate within the Sherwood Constituency.
