SHERWOOD MP ANNOUNCES DECISION NOT TO STAND AT NEXT GENERAL ELECTION

Paddy Tipping, Labour’s MP for Sherwood since 1992 has this week told Party members that he will not be their candidate at the forthcoming General election that will take place next Spring.

Paddy said today:
“This has been a difficult decision, which I have taken reluctantly. I have been ill this year and although I have made a good recovery, I don’t want to be in a position where, if re-elected, I would not be fit enough to pursue issues both locally and nationally as vigorously as I would want. I’ve always tried to be a very active and involved Constituency MP. I want to be remembered for this, rather than taking a back seat in the next Parliament.

It’s been a great privilege to represent Sherwood and I’m grateful for the support of local people and the Local Labour Party. Those local relationships will be what I miss most. Together we’ve achieved a lot.

Announcing a decision now meant that the Labour Party will be able to select a new candidate, hopefully by the turn of the year. The new candidate, the Labour Party and the Labour government can count on my support. Put bluntly, I’ll be continuing to campaign hard for fairness and justice.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me over so many years."

Paddy Tipping pledges to “do his bit” for British Armed Forces

Paddy Tipping MP for Sherwood has pledged to do his bit for the British Armed Forces family.

Paddy met with representatives from the Royal British Legion at the recent Labour Party conference in Brighton where he was presented with a copy of the Legion’s manifesto for the next general election.

The manifesto sets out priorities for the next Government to improve conditions for the British Armed Forces past and present and their families. It encourages MPs and prospective parliamentary candidates (PPCs) to “do their bit” for Service Personnel and their families, the bereaved, veterans and dependants.

Kevin Shinkwin, the Legions Head of Public Affairs, said, “We’re really grateful to Paddy for making the time to meet with us and listen to our concerns. Our message to every candidate standing at the general election is very simple. ‘It’s time to do your bit’.

“The entire Armed Forces family needs the support of politicians from all parties”, he added. “Our manifesto outlines practical ways the next government can help, and we hope all the parties will give it serious consideration”.

Paddy said, “I was delighted to meet with the Royal British Legion. They have an important role to play in highlighting the needs of the whole Armed Forces family. I have pledged to do my bit and would encourage everyone to do the same by visiting the general election manifesto website- www.timetodoyourbit.org.uk.to find out more”.

Local MP gets ahead to help beat breast cancer.

Paddy Tipping MP is joining forces with Breast Cancer Campaign to raise awareness of its award winning fundraising event, wear it pink, on Friday 30 October 2009.

It’s time to wear it pink, it’s time to beat breast cancer and Paddy is urging residents, young and old to get their pink outfits on. Schools, colleges and businesses throughout the country are encouraged to wear it pink in support of Campaign and donate £2 to each to fund innovative world-class breast cancer research.

Last year over one and a half million people took part in wear it pink to help improve survival rates for the one in nine women who experience breast cancer during their lifetime. This recession busting fundraiser is affordable and easy to take part in, giving everyone the chance to help make a difference.

Paddy Tipping MP says “Every year over 45, 500 women and 300 men in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer. Like many others, I know people who have lost friends and family members to breast cancer. I would like to encourage everyone in my Sherwood constituency and throughout the country to support wear it pink on October 30, to raise valuable funds for breast cancer research.”

Paddy Tipping MP celebrates successful Bookstart scheme

Paddy Tipping, the MP for Sherwood, intends to celebrate National Bookstart Day at Hucknall Library on the 8th October; one of many libraries across the county celebrating Bookstart’s national programme. The hugely successful scheme, run by the charity Booktrust; aims to gift free books to all children at three key stages including the Baby pack, gifted at around 8 months, the Bookstart + for those aged 18 months and the Treasure Chest for toddlers of 3 years.

The scheme is well documented for its impact on children’s educational development. Bookstart has been widely successful in Nottinghamshire, with 100% of babies receiving their first book gift in 2008. It is just part of a larger activity programme, undertaken by the Nottinghamshire Libraries’ Early Years Team, which aims to inspire children through the reading of favourite books.

Paddy said: ‘I know personally the importance of making books available for small children and the strong bonds that develop between parents and children through early reading with them. I am delighted to promote the Bookstart scheme together with the County Council and want to encourage families with young children to visit their local libraries’.

The event at Hucknall Library will take place this coming Thursday, 8th October, between 10:30 and 11am and will feature appearances from famous nursery rhyme characters. Other events for children, based on nursery rhymes, will be taking place regularly across the county this week. To find out more about these events, parents should contact their local library for details.

Paddy Tipping, MP for Sherwood launches the campaign to find Lollipop Person of the Year 2009

The competition to find the Lollipop Person of the Year has been launched today by Paddy Tipping MP in his Sherwood constituency. Paddy met with lollipop lady Mrs Rattana Fritchley from The Hucknall National Primary School in the hope that it will encourage other schools in the area to nominate their lollipop person in a bid to win the coveted title of the Kwik Fit Insurance Lollipop Person of the Year 2009.

The winning school will be presented with £3000 to spend on school equipment and the Lollipop Person of the Year will win a holiday of a lifetime. In addition, the competition will also announce twelve regional winners from across the UK who will also receive £500 worth of holiday vouchers and each of the twelve schools will be awarded with £100 worth of book tokens.

The competition also aims to be great fun for the children. In previous years, pupils have nominated their lollipop person by writing poems and letters, creating drawings and even DVDs with the help of parents and teachers.

According to road safety charity and competition partner, Brake, 4 million children in England alone travel to and from school on foot every day. Pedestrian injury is listed as the leading cause of accidental death of children in the UK. The campaign and accompanying competition, aims to improve the UK’s safety record.

Paddy said today, ‘I was delighted to meet Rattana today who showed me what a valuable job she and her colleagues do nationally to keep our children safe on their way to and from school. I want to encourage all schools to take part in the competition to celebrate their good work’.

The competition website: www.bestlollipop.co.uk has been set up to engage children, teachers and parents alike.

Paddy continues to recover

Paddy continues to recover well after his heart attack on Saturday June 27. Paddy has had an an angioplasty, a surgical repair of his arteries. He is now under strict instruction to take it easy and get plenty of rest to help him recover.

Paddy knew he might be at risk because his two younger brothers and his father suffered from heart problems. However he has always been regarded as extra-fit because he is a keen walker and a lead member of the Ramblers Association and also runs regularly.

"But I did not listen to my body, I had been getting stabbing pains in the chest while exercising and put them down to indigestion.

"But then the pains became really severe and I was rushed into the QMC casualty department. The care I received at the hospital was fabulous."

He is now back home and has been 'pottering in his garden' as he convalesces. He will return to work in his Sherwood constituency, as soon as he can and in the meantime his staff are holding the fort so constituents who need help should continue to contact the office as normal.

MP URGES MINERS TO CLAIM UNDER NEW SCHEME

Paddy Tipping MP for Sherwood, today welcomed an announcement that from this week thousands of coal miners suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee, sometimes referred to as “miners’ knee”, will be able claim Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB).

Paddy joined Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, in urging claimants to go directly to Jobcentre Plus for help with their claims and to avoid paying for solicitors.

Paddy said:

“This is a very welcome step – I want to make sure that everyone eligible in the Sherwood constituency knows how to claim and receives the money that they are entitled to.”

Yvette Cooper said:

“It is only right that this help should be available to coal miners who have worked hard all their lives and are now suffering from this painful condition.

“It is also vital people understand they can claim direct through Jobcentre Plus and do not need to pay for the services of solicitors. This will ensure they get all the money they are entitled to.

Paddy Tipping, MP for Sherwood has launched a Cruelty Free office

The MP for Sherwood can now proudly declare that his constituency office is cruelty free. Paddy has taken the step to ensure that all the cleaning products used are genuinely cruelty free, only using those approved under the BUAV’s humane standard.

Paddy has joined forces with the BUAV to Clean Up Cruelty; supporting the campaign to end animal testing for household products and their ingredients.

He said: “Animals should not be subjected to unnecessary testing. Progress has already been made to halt animal testing for cosmetics. I want to go further – it’s a simple step to introduce cleaning products that are cruelty free”

Michelle Thew, chief executive of the BUAV, said: “It’s fantastic that Paddy is supporting our campaign and putting Sherwood on the cruelty free map.

“I call on all politicians to follow his lead and sign up to this important campaign.”

81% of the public said they would support a ban on the testing of household products on animals, though many ingredients in UK household products have been, and can continue to be, tested on animals.
